Thermodynamics in the Land of Fire and Ice
Reykjavik, Iceland
Iceland is a unique setting to learn about renewable power and thermodynamic science, as it sits upon an area where the tectonic plates are dividing, and the land is being shaped by volcanic and glacial activity. We will stay on the outskirts of Reykjavik and take field trips to power plants and manufacturing facilities. We will visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site Þingvellir, where deep fissures between the North American and European Plates are visible. As we explore Iceland, we will see exotic birds, waterfalls, and geothermal fields. Near the Arctic Circle, we will have a chance to experience the midnight sun (weather permitting). Yosemite National Park will remain closed
Yosemite National Park will remain closed through Thursday, March 16—possibly longer. A partial reopening on March 17 is a best-case scenario. Another storm system is forecast starting today, with additional storms forecast next week, all of which could result in further impacts to the park. Conditions will be evaluated on a daily basis and the park will provide an update late next week. As park crews continue snow removal operations and flood preparation, employee safety remains the top priority.
We have received significant snowfall over the last several weeks. National Park Service and partner crews are working hard to reopen as soon as it is safe. Some tasks park crews are focused on right now: -Plowing roads to two full lanes wide. -Plowing parking lots and pullouts. Many parking lots are still under up to six feet of snow. -Evaluating snow loading on trees near roads and facilities (which could cause trees to fall in popular areas). -Locating and digging out hundreds of fire hydrants and propane tanks. -Damage assessments on park buildings (mostly damage to chimneys and roof vents from snow sliding off roofs). -Removing snow from rooftops to prevent structure collapse and danger to bystanders from snow sliding off roofs. -Various other facilities and vehicles need to be dug out, repaired, and/or resupplied. -Contingency planning for flood impacts. 1. Front-end loader expands plowed area surrounded by several feet of snow. Tops of tent cabins barely visible in background due to deep snow. 2. Grader scrapes ice off the plowed parking lot. 3. Loader dumps snow in a pile of snow. 4. View from passenger seat inside a car driving on a road plowed one lane wide with several feet of snow on both sides of the road. Half Dome visible above the road. 5. Curry Village front office with a few feet of snow on the roof and with a path through snow that is several feet deep. Glacier Point Apron in background. 6. A person walking on a plowed path with snow up to their shoulders; "The Deck" is visible in the background. 7. A wood cabin with several feet of snow on the slanted roof, surrounded by snow up to the bottom of the windows. It is snowing. 8. Human milk is essential, yet scientists know little about it. UCSD plans to change that
It is the first academic institution in the U.S. devoted to a crucial element of human nutrition that science is only beginning to understand. “I find it fascinating that we know so little about it,” said institute director Lars Bode, a sugar biologist at UC San Diego. “How is it possible that there is an entire biosynthetic pathway in the human body where if you had to put this in a biochemistry textbook, you would have an empty page?”

Grant Will Fund Development of New, Technically Advanced Agriculture Workforce
A UC Merced researcher has been awarded a grant aimed at sparking interest and knowledge among disadvantaged young students who could grow up to take those jobs as the current workforce ages out.
Mechanical engineering Professor Reza Ehsani leads a team awarded a $999,983 grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA-HSI program) to fund "Integrated Education Programs to Train Students for a Future in the Agricultural and Food Industry." The program will be developed at two sites: UC Merced and West Hills College in Coalinga (WHCC). Professors Yang Quan Chen, Jian-Qiao Sun and Leili Afsah-Hejri from UC Merced and Terry Brase from WHCC are other co-PIs on this project. It's expected to include 585 Central Valley students, ranging from elementary to graduate level. |

Ryals’ Teaching, Research and Service Earns Her Presidential Chair in Climate Change
Professor Rebecca Ryals has made campus history by being named UC Merced’s inaugural Presidential Chair in Climate Change. The appointment was recommended by her peers and Dean Betsy Dumont from the School of Natural Sciences in recognition of Ryals’ outstanding research, teaching and service.
The chair is one of two being established by a $1 million gift to the university in support of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) professorships for research focused on climate change. Additionally, funding provided through the University of California Office of the President’s Presidential Matching Chair initiative will double the impact of the philanthropic contribution. |
Record Number of Students Apply to UC Merced
UC Merced once again broke a record for the number of first-year applications the university received, continuing to show impressive growth even as the national trend shows a decline in the number of students enrolling in higher education.
More than 26,000 prospective first-year, or freshmen, students applied for admission to the university. And nearly 4,000 students applied to transfer to UC Merced. Most of the applicants are from California. |
